Sciton Broad Band Light (BBL™) Treatments
BBL is Sciton’s trademarked name for their IPL (Intensed Pulsed Light) machine which is far more powerful and controllable than previous generations of IPL devices. Many of our patients report that it delivers the most effective photofacial treatment; it can improve many skin imperfections, with little to no downtime.
What conditions can be treated with BBL?
Some of the most bothersome skin issues many Guelph and area residents face are the brown age spots, broken capillaries, sallow tone and fine wrinkles that result after years of sun exposure. Many others are also troubled by residual acne discolouration or the flushing and redness of Rosacea.
Broad Band Light (BBL) is the name for the next generation of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment. When performed with the more powerful Sciton system, BBL is one of the most exciting therapies that can help these concerns. The treatment can dramatically even skin color, fading away browns and reds and improving fine wrinkles and tone. Exciting new research at Stanford has found that regular Sciton BBL treatments actually improve DNA damage in deeper layers of skin, slowing the changes of aging and causing skin to behave and look as it did when it was younger.
What is Broad Band Light (BBL™)?
BBL and IPL and photofacial are three terms for a class of device that uses a flash lamp to produce light energy of many wavelengths at the same time. Just like lasers, different devices offer a wide range of power outputs. High-energy treatments create laser-like effects. BBL is Sciton’s trademarked name for their IPL machine which is far more powerful and controllable than previous generation IPL devices.
Your treatment will be tailored to match your skin type and your desired results. Any area of your body can be treated. The most common areas are those most exposed to the damaging effects of sunlight. The most popular treatments are on the face, neck, back of the hands, chest and shoulders.
How does BBL work?
The light energy delivered by the BBL will gently heat the upper layers of your skin. The heat absorbed by the targeted areas will stimulate your skin cells to regenerate new collagen foundation, leading to increased skin firmness. This process will restore your skin to its natural beauty, blending its natural colors and making it smoother, vibrant and younger looking. In addition, the photothermal energy will eliminate fine vessels that cause redness and reduce unwanted melanin that produces pigmented lesions.
What will happen during the procedure?
Your eyes will be protected with safety shields or glasses. BBL treatments usually takes 30 minutes or less, depending on the size of the area. It may cause some discomfort, which most patients compare to the sensation of a rubber band snapping. Depending on the condition being treated, you may have no after effects, or a mild pinkness that fades quickly or some minor swelling. If brown spots are targeted, they will initially darken, and then slough off over the next week.
How many treatments will I need?
Best results usually require a series of 3-4 treatments, depending on degree of damage to be repaired. Treatments can also be combined with skin tightening modalities, microlaserpeels or fractional resurfacing treatments for even more dramatic results. The number of treatments needed will vary from patient to patient and the clinician will personalize a treatment plan based on the level of improvement you desire.
What should I expect after treatment?
You may experience some redness and/or swelling that should resolve within a few hours. For some pigmented lesions, you will see a darkening of the treated areas followed by fading and flaking off at a later stage. Your treated skin will feel smoother, fine lines and pores will be less noticeable, and sunspots or uneven pigmentation will diminish. Results depend on your condition, the number of treatments, and the area treated. The clinician will provide you with complete information about the post-treatment care and results.
It is important to follow the clinician’s aftercare instructions. You may be given some skin care products and instructions on how to use them. You will be sensitive to ultraviolet light and you must avoid direct sun exposure until completely healed. Fully cover your skin or use a broad spectrum sunscreen whenever you go outdoors.
How long will it take to recover?
This is a noninvasive and gentle procedure with virtually no downtime. In most cases, you are immediately able to apply makeup, return to work, and resume most activities.
Whether your skin concern is superficial or deep acne scars, surgical scars on the face or body, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation or photodamage, fine lines or deep set wrinkles, there finally exists a treatment which actually works.

With Fraxel, change isn’t drastic or scary – it’s you, just younger.

How does a Fraxel® treatment work?
Fraxel DUAL 1550/1927 laser treatment targets aging and sun-damaged skin with microscopic laser columns that penetrate deep into your skin to expedite your body’s remodeling of collagen. And since the laser treats only a fraction of tissue at a time, it leaves the surrounding tissue intact, which promotes very rapid healing. Fraxel DUAL 1550/1927 treatment resurfaces your skin by stimulating the growth of new, healthy skin cells from the inside out.
How are Fraxel® treatments performed?
First, your skin will be cleansed. Then, about 60 minutes prior to treatment, a topical anesthetic ointment will be applied to the treatment area. The Fraxel® procedure takes 20 to 30 minutes for a full face.
What are the benefits of Fraxel® treatments?
- Smoother, fresher, younger-looking looking skin
- Improved tone and texture
- Erasing of unwanted brown spots
- Reduced fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes
- Improved appearance of acne scars and surgical scars
Does a Fraxel® treatment hurt?
Most patients describe an increased sensation of heat during the treatment. To minimize discomfort, topical anesthesia is applied before the procedure and cold air is used on the treatment area during the procedure. After the treatment, most patients feel like they have a sunburn, which usually diminishes in 1 to 3 hours.
What precautions should I take after a Fraxel® treatment?
Wear sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, avoid direct sun exposure for at least 3 months after your last treatment, and wear a wide-brimmed hat when you’re in the sun.
What should I expect after a Fraxel® treatment?
During the first 24 hours after a treatment, your skin may feel as though it is sunburned, and it will appear pink or red and you may possibly have some swelling. You can wear make-up to reduce the sunburned appearance. Your skin will naturally bronze over the next week or two, and as you continue treatment, the sunburned-to-bronzed appearance will repeat. As with a sunburn, your skin will flake and exfoliate normally. Use a moisturizer to reduce the appearance of dry flakes.
How many Fraxel® treatments will I need, and how will they be spaced?
Clinical studies suggest that on average, an effective treatment regimen is 2 to 6 sessions spaced about 5 to 6 weeks apart. Depending on your condition and schedule, you and the physician and laser technician may choose to space treatment sessions further apart. Results are immediate and progressive, with optimal improvement usually visible in 2 to 3 months. This time frame and treatment structure allow for complete healing and the production of new collagen and elastin to replace damaged tissue.
Not exclusive to teenagers, many young adults, people in their 20s and 30s, have trouble with acne that is hard to control. We know there are many acne treatments out there for you to try and it can be overwhelming. If you have moderate acne and are uncomfortable taking antibiotics or are unhappy with your current topical treatment results, BLU-U® blue light therapy – using light without drugs or antibiotics – may be something for you to try.
What is BLU-U Blue Light Treatment?
The BLU-U is a unique blue light that kills the P. acnes bacteria in your skin.
What is BLU-U Blue Light Treatment like?
BLU-U Blue Light Treatments are simple – you sit with your face close to the blue light for a short time – approximately a 17-minute session about once or twice per week. The length of the treatment course varies depending on the severity of your acne.
Is BLU-U therapy safe?
Yes, BLU-U therapy is safe. It is a gentle treatment with little discomfort and minimal adverse effects. It is not hot, and it is not painful at all.
The BLU-U blue light is available at our Guelph location of ArtMed. You can ask if your case of moderate acne is right for BLU-U blue light treatment. If you are looking for an alternative to medications or antibiotics, it might be just what you need.
Levulan® (aminolevulenic acid) used with Blu-U™ is a two-step treatment. Levulan® is applied to the skin and activated by the Blu-U™. This treatment kills the acne bacteria and also peels the superficial skin layers.
Light energy alone can have a significant effect on the skin, but we are always looking for better, gentler, more effective, or more versatile solutions to offer our patients. One of the great discoveries in the realm of photofacial treatments was the discovery of photosensitizers.
Levulan is formulated with delta aminolevulinic acid a compound that is naturally present in the human body. When applied topically, prior to Blu-U light therapy, it dramatically enhances the effect. Following treatment, you will notice damaged skin sloughing off, and you may feel as though you have been sunburned. However, this only lasts a few days before fresh, healthy, radiant skin is revealed. Most acne patients experience significant improvement with between one and six treatments.
Chemical Peels are used to address multiple skin conditions including Acneic Skin, Hyperpigmentation and they help improve skin texture and tone. At ArtMed, we carry a variety of chemical peels that suit different skin types and conditions. Chemical peels can be performed on the face, chest, hands and back. During your free consultation we will analyze what peel best suits you. A series of treatments are always recommended to obtain the best results. You must stop using products containing Vitamin A three to five days prior to treatment. We strongly advise that you use SPF 30 after treatment and as part of your daily facial regime.
